Need help figuring out the best floor plan for your home, whether it’s a new build or a renovation? Here’s my streamlined guide to help you maximise both style and functionality in your space.
Determine Room Activities
Identify the main activities for each room, like dining, entertaining, or sleeping. These primary uses should guide how you allocate space.
Measure the Room and Furniture
Accurate measurements of both the room and your furniture pieces are essential to avoid fitting issues and ensure a comfortable layout.
Identify Focal Points
Arrange seating and key furniture to highlight the room’s focal points, whether it’s a fireplace, a TV, or a large window with a view.
Plan Flow and Pathways
Design clear walkways, ideally 75-90 cm wide for main paths and at least 40 cm of clearance around smaller furniture, to maintain good flow.
Avoid Obstacles
Ensure windows, doors, and radiators are unobstructed, and keep main pathways clear to improve accessibility and maintain visual openness.
Start with Key Furniture Pieces
Begin with the largest items like sofas, beds, or dining tables to anchor the space. Once these are in place, add smaller pieces such as side tables, chairs, and ottomans to complete the layout.
Consider Balance and Symmetry
For a formal look, go with symmetrical arrangements to create balance. For a more relaxed, contemporary feel, an asymmetrical layout works well.
Create Activity Zones
Designate specific zones for various activities, like a cosy reading nook or a media area, especially in open-concept layouts.
This quick guide will help you plan a floor layout that not only fits your furniture but also enhances the flow, function, and style of each space in your home.

‘We recently had the pleasure of having Sharon design our room, and we couldn’t be more satisfied with the experience. Sharon was incredibly helpful and efficient from the start. She began by sending out a detailed questionnaire to understand our style preferences, followed by a home visit to discuss ideas, clarify details and colour schemes, and take precise measurements of the room.
The following week, Sharon returned with a comprehensive CAD drawing of the design, complete with a personalised shopping list featuring the exact items in the drawings along with their prices. Her attention to detail was impeccable, and she even brought two paint samples that would work perfectly with the interior plan, along with swatches for sofas, wood, and marble.
Additionally, she provided exact measurements and detailed drawings for the panelling in the room, which has allowed my husband to commence the work himself. Overall, Sharon was great at translating our vision into a tangible design. She was efficient, full of great ideas, and extremely accommodating with her home visits. I highly recommend her services to anyone looking to bring their interior dreams to life’.
